Activist Proposal
I am currently a member of the Green Life Organization. One of the main issues that the Green Life deals with on campus is recycling. Recycling not only helps the environment, but it also helps out with resources that are scarce. Recycling should be a big thing on campus and it should be something that all students who live on campus participate in. It doesn’t take much effort to separate the stuff you put in the trash and then carry it across the road to the nearby recycle station. The Green Life offers plenty of recycle stations so that no one would have to walk very far at all to recycle. A lot of them are even close to dumpsters so when you throw your trash away you can just recycle some of your trash as well.
Not enough people on campus recycle their garbage. Most people are too lazy and many items that can be reused just get thrown away. My goal in the Activist Proposal is to promote recycling. There is way too much that can be reused, especially in our college community. The USI campus offers plenty of places to dispose of recyclable goods so there should be no reason to not recycle, except out of laziness. Recycling helps the earth and our resources.
My solution for this proposal is to be active in my college community and get the word out there about recycling as much as possible. I will come up with flyers, brochures and information guides on recycling. The brochures will contain information on why you should recycle, what kinds of everyday items can be recycled, where you can recycle, and the benefits of recycling. Some of the key points that I will include in why everyone should recycle will be that recycling saves resources, it saves energy, and it protects the environment. Things that can be recycled here at USI are aluminum, plastic, and paper. I will try and make the information as exciting as possible in order to attract the reader’s attention and make them actually want to read the brochures.
The flyers we are creating will contain information on how recycling helps our environment and all of those around us, what types of materials can be recycled, how to recycle properly, and the many places on campus that offer recycling. I want to hang up the fliers in places where everyone on campus will get to see them. I will put some on the bulletin boards in the various buildings around campus. Also I want to put them up on the doors of the apartments and maybe even on some of the vehicles in the parking lots.
To get people interested in actually talking to me about recycling I might even try and find some recycled goods to hand out, such as water bottles, Frisbees, and other fun recycled stuff that college students would use in their free time (us college kids love free stuff). My R.A. handed out some recycled water bottles and Frisbees to everyone in our building. I could ask him where he got them and figure out where I can get them from as well.
My overall goal is to help out the Green Life in making USI campus a greener place by having all residents recycle their goods. If everyone just recycled all the paper that we use and the water bottles, it may even be a small step to making the city of Evansville a better and greener place to live and enjoy.
